Working with local communities
One of the objectives at The Llama Sanctuary is to make our animals accessible to those who would not normally have the luxury of seeing and interacting with exotic creatures. We believe that being around llamas is generally a calming, relaxing experience. Listening to them chew, gentley hum, and move about their pasture in a somewhat meditative manner has a tranquil quality that can destress even the busiest most active soul. They are wonderfully forgiving, tactile creatures that are patient with both children and busy adults alike.
Where appropriate, we work with our rehomed llamas and desensitise them so that they are equiped to experience visits from our local communities. It is not appropriate to expose every llama to such a task - they are all individuals with different backgrounds - and consequently we only use those most suited to this role.
The llamas work with different groups across society who could potentially benefit from animal interaction. Examples of areas that we can work include children and adults with special educational needs and disabilities, retirement homes, schools, and disadvantaged groups across society. Our llamas are not intended as replacements for conventional care / assistance, but can be used in a manner that compliments existing support, and can aid in positive outcomes for the individuals interacting with the llamas.
If you represent an organisation that supports individuals and groups such as those mentioned above, we would love to hear from you and discuss how we might be able to help.
